Barbara Bettis with Silver Hawk

Welcome back to another Medieval Monday and today I have Barbara Bettis. She's sharing a snippet from Silver Hawk part of her Knights of Destiny series. You can find my next snippet over at Barbara Bettis Blog.

Dear God. What if the child caught Garley’s eye? He’d know at once to use her as a lever against Emelin. She propped her elbows on her knees and covered her face with her hands. Her chest hurt; she couldn’t swallow. One tear, then another, then more slipped between her fingers to roll down her forearms.

She wept silently until her nose began to run. Grabbing the wimple, she blew into it and mopped her eyes with the other end. At least that solved the problem of the terrifying head wrap. A tiny smile tugged one side of her mouth. Perhaps the child, Margaret, wouldn’t weep at her now. She straightened and flexed her shoulders. Enough self-pity.

He’s everything a proper lady should never want; she’s everything a bastard mercenary can never have.

Sir Giles has come to England to kill his father, who seduced and betrayed his mother. First, however, he’ll seek sweet revenge—kidnap the old lord’s new betrothed. But when Giles uncovers a plot against King Richard, he faces a dilemma: take the lady or track the traitors. What’s a good mercenary to do? Both, of course.

Lady Emelin has had enough. Abandoned in a convent by her brother, she finally has a chance for home and family. Yet now she’s been abducted. Her kidnapper may be the image of her dream knight, but she won’t allow him to spoil this betrothal. Her only solution: escape

Rescuing the intrepid lady—while hunting traitors—is a challenge Giles couldn’t anticipate. But the greatest challenge to Giles and Emelin is the fire blazing between them.
