Nine Hundred and Fifty Years Ago

The year was 1066 and Duke William of Normandy was hell bent on taking over the throne promised him by his deceased relative, Edward the Confessor. Since the thegns had crowned, rather quickly, the most influential man in England, Harold Godwineson, William had his work cut out for him.

A perfect plot line! Don't you think?

It was nearing the end of September in 1066 that the winds were favorable and the Duke finally launched nearly a thousand ships from Normandy bound for the English coast. Armed with some seven thousand men, three thousand horses, and pre-fabricated forts, they landed in Pevensey on September 28th.

That this was a most impressive invasion goes without saying. A most disciplined army of vassals and mercenaries, trained by Duke William. England had been invaded before but never like this. That the Duke was successful is not a surprise.
