Niccolo Machiavelli lived from 1469 to 1527 and is most famously associated with the book The Prince. If you’ve studied this time period, even in a general way, you’ve probably had this book on your reading list. According to The History Guide, the theme of this short book is “all means may be resorted to for the establishment and preservation of authority — the end justifies the means — and that the worst and most treacherous acts of the ruler are justified by the wickedness and treachery of the governed.” Quite a theme, especially in this political season.
